The primary goal of the proposed effort is to generate a set of innovative research topics on the notion of simplicity as a driving paradigm in ICT development, maintenance and use. We believe that the philosophy of simplicity is strategically important, yet poorly understood, and rarely systematically applied. Instead, design principles attempt to focus on increased functionality within thinly disguised complexity, often at the expense of life cycle costs and total cost of ownership issues (e.g., training, system malfunctions, system upgrades). Often designers are unaware of the tradeoffs and impacts. With the increased use of ICT in such socially critical areas such as healthcare, society can no longer afford systems that do not perform as specified.

Selbstorganisierende Software: erst vom Übermorgen?

Am kommenden Freitag begrüßt das Informatik-Kolloquium der Universität Potsdam Dr. Mike Hinchey, Informatik-Professor an der Universität Limerick und Co-Direktor von LERO, dem irischen Forschungszentrum für Software Engineering, und langjährigen Berater der amerikanischen Raumfahrtbehörde NASA. In seinem Vortrag wird er über die zukünftigen Anforderungen an Software in einem praxisorientierten Kontext sprechen. Der Bedarfsbereich umfasst alles von IT-Anwendungen mittelständischer Unternehmen bis hin zur notwendigen Technik für unbemannte Raummissionen. Die Zuhörer -- darunter sowohl Fachexperten als auch solche, die es werden wollen -- interessieren sich vor allem für Hincheys Ausführungen zu gen Grundprinzipen, die dies alles ermöglichen, und für seine Zukunftsprognosen zum Thema. Doch auch sein praktischer Erfahrungsschatz weckt die Neugier der Zuhörer. Derzeit ist Prof. Hinchey vor allem mit selbst-organisierenden Systemen befasst. Vorher leitete er als Direktor das Software Engineering Labor der NASA. Mit diesem Vortrag zeigt die Potsdamer Informatik, dass sie in mehr als einem Forschungsbereich international etabliert ist.

It condenses and compares the results of the first two years of the Semantic Web Service Challenge.

The joint work by the SCCE (http://www.scce.info/) groups is there prominently represented, with contributions on the Mediation and Discovery Scenarios as well as with in-depth comparison chapters with other approaches.

The Status paper on "Software engineering and formal methods" appears in the Communications of the ACM. (Volume 51, Issue 9, http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1378727.1378742). Stemming from the reflections after the invited talks at SEFM 2008, co-chaired by Tiziana Margaria and Mike Hinchey, the paper condenses the views and the perspectives on formal methods by the invited speakers (Patrick Cousot, Michael Jones, and Byron Cook), and chairs.

Tiziana Margaria held and invited talk on the specific spikes of the SWS-C at ICECCS 2008 (the 13th International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems in Belfast in April 2008), invited by Jim Woodcock, who coordinates the Experiments track of the VSI Grand Challenge.

"Everything you ever wanted to know about software assurance": The title of the panel organized by Mike Hinchey (NASA) at ISSRE 2007, the 18th IEEE International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering in Trollhättan (Sweden), November 5th - 9th 2007 tickled participation and debate. Panelist Tiziana Margaria spoke about the gap between high assurance (by formal methods) and extreme delegation (as in Web services).

SHADOWS Project start (EU-STREP 035157).

SHADOWS (Self-Healing Approach to Designing Complex Software Systems) is a three-year EU STREP project lasting for 36 months until May 2009. It targets the problem of growing software complexity and its detrimental impact on software reliability by introducing a new model-based paradigm for the development of self-healing software systems. This paradigm improves the reliability of complex software systems by implementing an innovative software solution for the automatic detection, localization, and healing of faults.

Our associated partners are IBM research Labs Haifa, University of Milan Bicocca, University of Potsdam, University of Brno, Artisys, Comverse Technologies, Net Technologies, Philips and Scapa Technologies.

Prof. Dr. Tiziana Margaria is elected Fellow of the Society for Design and Process Sciences (SDPS). In the award ceremony during the IDPT 2006 Conference in San Diego, Dr. Margaria received the plaque honoring her new status.

Ein  jABC Mashup Service gewinnt nationalen Wettbewerb von Ricoh und Sun!

Benjamin Hanzelmann und Stefan Naujokat haben mit ihrem Projekt "jAWS" nicht nur das nationale Finale des von Ricoh und Sun ausgerichteten "Europäischen Java Programmierwettbewerbs 2006" erreicht, sondern dieses zudem auch gewonnen. Ihr Projekt betrifft ein jABC Mashup Service mit geografischen Daten aus dem Internet. Wir gratulieren beiden herzlich und wünschen viel Glück für die europäische Endausscheidung am 4. und 5. Mai in Amsterdam!

Frau Prof. Tiziana Margaria re-elected EASST President for a second 3-year term.

At the EASST General Assembly in Vienna the assembly confirmed Prof. Dr. Tiziana Margaria (Chair of Service and Software Engineering, Univ.Potsdam) and the Prof. Dr. Hartmut Ehrig (Chair of ???, TU Berlin) as President and Vice President, respectively.  New Treasurer is Dr. Michael G. Hinchey, who heads the Software Engineering Laboratory at NASA GSFC, Greenbelt (USA).

Lehrstuhl für Service and Software Engineering der Universität Potsdam in Halle 1 auf der CeBIT!

Zusammen mit Kollegen der Universitäten Dortmund und Göttingen präsentieren die Potsdamer auf dem SUN-Partnerstand eine Technologie, die es ermöglicht, dass die multifunktionalen Drucker von Ricohs Aficio Serie komplexe Geschäftsprozesse im Internet steuern können. Als Beispiel dient eine Anwendung, die mit Hilfe Service-orientierter Einbindung von Schrifterkennungssoftware und dem Geo-Informationssystem der ProDV AG Visitenkarten in Anfahrtsskizzen verwandelt.

jETI presented at ETAPS 2005 and ECBS 2005.
The kernel of the new jETI Webservices Platform is now ready! It has been presented at ECBS 2005 in Washington DC and demonstrated at TACAS 2005 in Edinburgh.
We are starting now a large Student Project to enhance user's comfort and to provide a mature execution management environment for the tool providers.
